Mercedes Benoit-Penney was born, raised and educated in Stephenville, Newfoundland, Canada. She graduated with a BA Ed degree from Memorial University. As a teacher, historian and mother she advocated for educational standards in the local school system and wrote editorials for newspapers and magazines. She began writing while still in school and developed a passion in later years to record her heritage. Now retired, her knowledge and research of her homeland, the Acadians and Mi'kmaq first families make her uniquely qualified to produce wonderfully accurate and informative histories of this part of Newfoundland.
